If you aren't sure whether you have type 2
diabetes, or if you are at risk for developing
type 2 diabetes, keep in mind that type 2
diabetes has its own set of risk factors. The
following risk factors have been identified by
the American Diabetes Association (ADA):
- Age > 45 years.
- Overweight (a BMI of 25 kg/m2 or higher).
- Ethnic background (African Americans, Asian
Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native
Americans all have a higher risk of developing
type 2 diabetes).
- A family history of type 2 diabetes (parents,
brothers, and sisters).
- Inactive lifestyle.
- A history of gestational diabetes during
pregnancy, or having given birth to a baby who
weighs more than 9 pounds.
- Hypertension (> 140/90 mm Hg).
- HDL cholesterol < 35 mg/dL and/or triglyceride
level > 250 mg/dL.
If you think you could have type 2 diabetes,
talk to your health professional. The
recommended screening test for diabetes is known
as a fasting blood glucose (FBG) test. If the
results of your FBG test are equal to or above
126 mg/dL, the test should be repeated on a
different day. If both tests are above 126 mg/dL,
you have type 2 diabetes. Your healthcare team
can help you develop a plan to successfully
manage your diabetes. |
